Shopping centers are said to have their starting point in arcades. The oldest arcade in Europe is “The St. Hubertus Galleries“ whose construction was completed in 1847 in Brussels. It is well-known, along with the “Galleria Vittorio Emmanuel’s II“ in Milano, which also dates from the same period. More than a century has passed since the appearance of those old arcades, and although there have been changes, such as the increased size in the number of tenants, present-day shopping centers remain unchanged in that all season gallery (galleria) type mall style facility with an atrium is the main stream design.
