Galleria: 26 Shopping Centers in Europe by Shoichi Moto (1994, Hardcover). Shopping centers are said to have their starting point in arcades. The oldest arcade in Europe is “The St. Hubertus Galleries“ whose construction was completed in 1847 in Brussels. It is well-known, along with the “Galleria Vittorio Emmanuel’s II“ in Milano, which also dates from the same period. More than a century has passed since the appearance of those old arcades, and although there have been changes, such as the increased size in the number of tenants, present-day shopping centers remain unchanged in that all season gallery (galleria) type mall style facility with an atrium is the main stream design. It is no exaggeration to say that the only requirement for making a shopping center operation a success, has the capability to attract shoppers. In other words, it is vital to make the facility attractive enough to repeatedly utilized by consumers, that is, the key to success, lies in securing as many repeat customers as possible. For this purpose, it is absolutely necessary to create a comfortable space which can be utilized without being affected by weather or temperature. Designing such a space is an important task that architects and designers are required to do, along with securing attractive tenants, allotting space, holding various events, and other requirements for facility operation. This book details 26 shopping centers, including one under construction, whose construction was completed between 1991 and 1993 in 23 cities in 10 European countries, introducing the space and interior of facilities, centering around atriums by visibly showing their photos, plans, and data on tenant composition, etc. The 26 selected shopping centers are not a mere composite commercial facility. They include more public facilities, planned in the image of a near futuristic plaza in front of a City Hall, and also shopping centers constructed together with various other facilities, such as multi function facility, amusement facility, hotel, office, residential quarter, so that they can perform town, community, or even small city-wife functions. Please refer to this book not only for shopping center designing, but also has a collection of photos for finding hints comfortable space making concepts or creative approaches. #hardcover#photography#architecture#interiordesign#urbanplanning#europe#japanese#coffeetablebook
