The Other Side Of The Wardrobe 8: As she walked into the kitchen, Peg could not shake the idea that someone could harness the power of the caves, and wished that she could do it herself. Imagine: she and Thomas could live a whole lifetime without his worrying of his obligation to his poor wife. Peg harbored no ill will towards Thomas' wife, and tried to stamp down any resentment of Thomas' care of her. The poor woman was mad, and Thomas could not divorce her, could not leave her to the so-called Mercy Houses, even the best of which was a nightmare. Peg understood that, and knew too that she was luckier than many, because the children's trips gave them these opportunities, times when no matter what the woman did to herself it would be undone before long, so Thomas had a clear conscience. She found herself wandering the second level hallway with no clear goal. Her meandering thoughts had led her mind on a similar journey thru the house. She stood a moment, and then heard a cry.
