All eleven-year-old Jason Adrian wanted to do this summer was go to soccer camp with his best friend. The one thing he didn’t want to do was get sent off to Grandma McIntire’s while his stepparents were off on a vacation for two, and his stepsister got to go to a camp that was perfect for her. But when two of the school bullies took Jason out during soccer tryouts, leaving him with a bad sprain that would take far too long to heal, it looked like Grandma McIntire’s was exactly where he was headed. He probably should have guessed how weird things were going to get when a big crow attacked the window of his attic bedroom, and then went after Jason himself when he was foolish enough to take a look outside. That was the moment when everything started to go wrong. First a fall from the roof, then getting locked out, then the sprain that left him on the sidelines watching other kids being chosen for camp. And the really bizarre thing was that the crow had been clutching a torn off piece of paper with the message: “You may already have won….”But just when Jason was certain he was doomed for the summer, his English teacher, Mrs. Cowling, unexpectedly came to his rescue. Without telling Jason or his family, Mrs. Cowling had entered an essay of Jason’s in a special contest. And now he was being offered the chance to go to Camp Ravenwyng, a small place that was offering a free summer stay to kids with creativity and imagination. It sounded crazy but it was sure better than staying with an old lady who refused to get cable TV and thought jello was the high point of dessert. And with his English teacher’s assurances that it was a wonderful opportunity, even his overprotective stepmother couldn’t refuse. So a few days later Jason found himself boarding a funky little bus with a small group of kids and two very eccentric-looking counselors. The ride to Ravenwyng was the first tip-off that this was not going to be your run-of-the-mill camp, not when they suddenly went from nowhere to somewhere and time itself seemed to become totally confused in the process. And that was only the beginning. Before Jason’s time at Ravenwyng was done, he was going to make some great new friends, encounter some terrifying enemies that were out of this world, and discover things about himself and his own unique talents that he never would have believed. For Camp Ravenwyng was built on the border of some very unusual territory, land that was about to become a battleground between the Ravenwyngers-otherwise know as the Magickers-and their ancient enemies, the Dark Hand of Brennard. And the only chance the Magickers had of winning was if they could teach their new recruits to master their magical powers before the Hand attacked…
