Queen's Cross by Lawrence Schoonover Lawrence Schoonover, who published Queen's Cross in 1955, deserves much credit for his admiring portrait of Queen Isabella of Castile, since this shrewd and deftly autocratic warrior queen did not exactly match the 1950s concept of the ideal American woman.

As a seventeen-year-old princess, having refused to join a rebellion against her much-older half-brother, King Henry IV of Castile, Isabella helped negotiate a treaty in which Henry named her his heir, passing over his daughter. Successfully evading Henry's efforts to select her husband, Isabella chose instead to wed the young and dynamic Ferdinand, then King of Sicily and heir to the throne of Aragón. Upon Henry's death, she enforced her right to the throne of Castile by going to war against his daughter. She and Ferdinand, now King of Aragón, ruled jointly as equals over the two Spanish kingdoms their marriage united.

In 1492, the pair conquered the Moorish Kingdom of Granada, Isabella financed Christopher Columbus's voyage of discovery, and she reluctantly allowed the Inquisition into Spain, appointing her confessor, Tomás de Torquemada, as its first Inquisitor General. Even without fictionalizing, Isabella's life story reads like a novel, and Schoonover presents it, for the most part, with brisk straightforwardness.

Clara E. Laughlin's "The Gleaners" is a story which takes not only its name but its plot from Millet's well-known painting which a cousin sends to Julietta Grier because the cousin's husband declared it made his back ache. 

Julietta has always been a very difficult young person—narrow, peevish, fussy, exacting; but the picture and her study of its meaning set her at once to work along the higher roads of life. She begins by raising her washerwoman's pay, goes on to hire a maid servant, and inspires a youthful author, who has come out into the suburbs for such inspiration, until he writes a play —"The Servant in the House" type —whereby he captures New York and Julietta. The story is told with a lot of humor.

The cover is an orangey brown. There is fading on and around the spine from sun damage. It is very difficult to photograph, but the leather fades to a lighter brown near the spine and on the spine itself. There is some scratching on the gilded edge of the pages, and it has collected dust along the top pages near the ribbon from sitting on a shelf. I have not tried to clean it as I didn't want to damage the pages. There is a book plate stuck in the pages that has left a shadow (see photos). There are also a few pages that have staining near the spine. It almost looks like water damage but isn't consistent through the pages to be that.
