What is the difference between Legends and Canon?

Legends, formerly known as the Expanded Universe, comprise all Star Wars books published before April 25, 2014, at which point Lucasfilm wiped the slate clean and started fresh. Star Wars Canon books, all published after the 2014 reset, adhere to the storytelling narrative within the broader Star Wars franchise. That being said, all Star Wars books tell exciting stories worth reading, so there are no right or wrong answers when it comes to where to start!

All About Thrawn

Have you seen Ashoka and want to know more about the blue baddie? Or heard his name whispered among Star Wars fans? Wondering what a Chiss is? Well, I’ve got good news for you, because Thrawn is a character who gained fame through books!

Author Timothy Zahn began writing Thrawn in 1991 with the release of the now Legends book, Heir to the Empire. This post-Return of the Jedi story follows Thrawn as he leads the Imperial remnant as they are ready to wage war against Luke, Leia, Han, and the New Republic. These stories are as follows:

He continued to write the character in 2017 in canon with Thrawn, the beginning of a new trilogy which follows him in the Rebels timeline in the first person. If you really want to get into Thrawn’s head and understand the minutiae of his strategies as a tactician, these are the books for you.

Zahn again returned with another new trilogy in 2020. These books follow Thrawn in his time among his people, the Chiss, in the Unknown Regions, before he went to the Galaxy Far Far Away as we know it. If you want to better understand how the Thrawn we see in Rebels, Ahsoka, and the books came to be, this trilogy serves as a fascinating origin story not only of Thrawn, but of the mysterious Chiss society.
