Star Wars The High Republic: A Reading Order for Any Fan!

Published by Sarah Hass, May 4, 2024

Originally dubbed “Project Luminous” in 2019, The High Republic is a new Star Wars era, set 350-500 years before the events of the Skywalker Saga films that asks readers “What do the Jedi fear?” The story of The High Republic is told through science fiction books and comics for adults, young adults, and middle grade readers. With over 30 publications since 2021, it can be hard to know where to jump in and what threads to follow. But no worries, your local High Republic expert is here to bring you 3 High Republic reading orders based on your interests!

With The Acolyte premiering on Disney+ on June 4, marking the first time The High Republic will be seen in live action on screen, there is no better time to dive into The High Republic than the present!

At a glance:

  • There are over 10 contributing authors, including Claudia Gray, Charles Soule, and Daniel Jose Older.
  • You can read everything published, or pick and choose what story threads most interest you.

What is The High Republic?

At its core, the High Republic tells the story of the Jedi and the Republic in a time of great triumph, just as a new threat emerges. This threat, an attack dubbed The Great Hyperspace Disaster, is led by the anarchist group Nihil who, with formidable Marchion Ro, seek to disrupt and destabilize the Republic as it works to expand to more worlds and bring the galaxy together. The Republic’s efforts are symbolized by Starlight Beacon, a large-scale communications array and Jedi outpost, helping to connect the Core to the Outer Rim. But the Great Hyperspace Disaster is only the beginning of the threat to the Jedi and the Republic. As the threat to the Jedi grows, so does the mystery of the Nihil, and the Jedi’s fear of their power.

The High Republic is split into 3 phases

  • Light of the Jedi (2021-2022)
  • Quest of the Jedi (2022-2023)
  • Trials of the Jedi (2023-2025)

Reading orders 1 & 2: The whole story

Much like the Star Wars movies, The High Republic gives readers a prequel series for its second phase, before flashing forward to the future for its third phase. This brings us 2 distinct reading orders if you want to enjoy everything within the High Republic.

If you liked learning that (spoiler alert) Vader is Luke’s father before seeing Vader as young Anakin, and want to experience The High Republic in the same way that readers who began reading in 2021 did, release order is for you. You’ll learn about the fall of Starlight Beacon (no spoilers here, it’s a bit like watching the Titanic movie…you know the iceberg is coming!), then see how all the conflict began 150 years earlier, and then meet back up with your favorite Phase 1 characters in the aftermath of Starlight Beacon. As someone who has been reading The High Republic since 2021, this is how I’ve read it! It’s a solid choice, and the perk of starting this reading order now is that you don’t have to wait a year to get back to the Phase 1 characters after reading Phase 2! You'll want to read Phase 1, then Phase 2, and finally Phase 3 to follow the story in release order.

Alternatively, if you still want to experience it all, but want to experience a more linear story, chronological order is the way to go. In this order, you first dive into force cult the Path of the Open Hand and see the birth of the Nihil, and then flash forward 100+ years to The Great Hyperspace disaster and the fall of Starlight Beacon and its aftermath a year later in Phase 3. There are no downsides to chronological order - you get a linear story and have a sense of the big picture. If you’re just diving into the High Republic and want to read it all, this is a good way to go! To read in chronological order, start with Phase 2, and then read Phase 1 and Phase 3.

Reading order 3: The Nihil and the Nameless

“Only through the sacrifice of many Jedi will the Order cleanse the sin done to the nameless. The danger of the past is not past, but sleeps in an egg. When the egg cracks, it will threaten the galaxy entire. When the Force itself sickens, past and future must split and combine.” - Jedi prophecy from Claudia Gray’s Master and Apprentice

An ominous warning from Claudia Gray’s 2019 book Master and Apprentice foreshadows the central conflict within The High Republic. Namely, the Nameless problem. These mysterious force-sensitive creatures prey on the fear of the Jedi, consuming them and force-sensitive beings. Commanded by the Nihil leader Marchion Ro, the Jedi are powerless to stop them, unless they get to the root of what they fear… and face it.

  4. Light of the Jedi by Charles Soule

  6. Trail of Shadows by Daniel Jose Older
  7. The Fallen Star by Claudia Gray
  8. Star Wars: The High Republic: Eye of the Storm by Charles Soule

  11. Tears of the Nameless by George Mann
  12. Beware the Nameless by Zoraida Cordova
  13. Into the Light by Charles Soule

Despite the many books within The High Republic and the suggested reading orders I’ve shared here, reading The High Republic doesn’t need to be a project. This era is an easy one to fall in love with, there’s truly something for everyone! If you find one aspect of the era you love, you can stick with it! There are plenty of High Republic fans who are happy to fill in any gaps online with helpful guides and summaries.

No matter how you choose to read The High Republic, just remember: For light and life!
