Clio is the youngest daughter of the Oracle. She doesn't want to become one of the Oracle's vessels, as her older sisters have done, so she runs away. But that night, her mother and older sisters are killed and Clio inherits her mother's power of prophecy. In order to rescue her one remaining sister who is abducted by her family's killer, she escapes to a neighboring city where oracles are forbidden. She poses as a slave, but her disguise works too well and she is jailed as a runaway. She soon realizes her jailer could be instrumental in helping her achieve both saving her sister and her people, but only if she does not fall in love with him.
