ANTIQUE CLASSIC (September 1920). The book was originally published in 1900 by Blackwood & Sons. This edition was published by J.M. Dent & Sons in June 1917, with a very small print run. In November 1917, the book was reprinted by Dent & Sons: the type was reset, along with a new preface by the author and a frontis portrait. Hardcover with green cloth boards, faded gilt top edge page block. Bumped spine with small amount of fraying at bottom. Previous owner name on title page dated Amsterdam (he was a physician in Amsterdam and later relocated to the US). Age-toned pages with no other writing or folded pages. VINTAGE, FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION, FIRST PRINTING of the much loved classic. There are two reasons this first edition Steinbeck is priced so affordably. One - this is not a scarce edition but most are priced higher. Two - as with many copies for sale, this one has flaws. Previous owner info is written in pencil inside front cover. There are erased pencil lines on the title page and inside rear cover. Staining to boards, bumped corners and spine with minimal fraying. I tried to show flaws in the photos. This is still a solid, intact copy with watercolor illustrations by Wesley Dennis and all page edges tinted, as issued. And it may be as close as many of us will come to owning a 1st/1st Steinbeck.
