LIKE NEW: I will never rate a library book like new. These are books that look like they've never been read or owned.
EXCELLENT: The best condition for library books, and a great condition for books otherwise. Library books will have library markings (always pictured), but will have no further noted wear and tear. For non-library books, these are the books that have been read, but are not show no remarkable signs of wear, tear or defect.
GOOD: Show signs of use and mild to moderate wear. All pages are in tact and the book is completely readable. Library books have library markings, and some non-library books may have a dedication or stamp or sticker, some creases. Signs of formerly being loved.
FAIR: A book that shows visible signs of wear and tear. These books might have creases, folds, markings, or missing dust jackets (all pictured).  A 'fair' book will ALWAYS have its pages in tact, and the full book will be readable.
POOR: These books have seen better days. The pages might be loose, there are visible signs of wear and tear, the spine might be coming free from the book.

But the fact that this play exists in two early versions, printed in 1604 and 1616, has posed formidable problems for critics. How much of either version was written by Marlowe, and which is the more authentic? Is the play orthodox or radically interrogative?" "Michael Keefer's early work helped to establish the current consensus that the 1604 version best preserves Doctor Faustus's original form, and that the 1616 text was censored and revised; the first Broadview edition, praised for its lucid introduction and scholarship, was the first to restore two displaced scenes to their correct place. All competing editions presume that the 1604 text was printed from authorial manuscript, and that the 1616 text is of little substantive value. But in 2006 Keefer's fresh analysis of the evidence showed that the 1604 quarto's Marlovian scenes were printed from a corrupted manuscript, and that the 1616 quarto (though indeed censored and revised) preserves some readings earlier than those of the 1604 text." There is no known source for Marlowe's play, but it makes copious allusions to the famous Turkish seize of Christian Malta in 1565 that forms the international setting for the main character, Barabas. It greatly influenced Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice with its exploration of anti-semitism and revenge. A drama of half-swallowed asides, grotesquely hypocritical rhetoric, hyperbolic violence, of pervasive, cynical economic motivation and of religious and ethnic resentments, it is a potent reflection of the socio-economic forces at play in Elizabethan London, and of attitudes and tensions still identifiable four hundred years later. Faustus's story serves as a warning to those who would sacrifice righteous living for earthly gain. But Marlowe's play is also a deeply symbolic analysis of the shift from the late medieval view that the highest wisdom lay in the theologian's contemplation of God was yielding to the Renaissance view that the highest wisdom lay in the scientist's and statesman's rational analysis of the world around them. Caught between these ideals, Faustus is both a tragic fool destroyed by his own ambition and a hero at the forefront of a changing society. In Doctor Faustus, Marlowe thoughtfully examines faith and enlightenment, nature and science - and the terrible cost of the objects of our desire.
