Volume IX - Descendants of Hernán Martín Baena

Volume IX is a continuation of the journey of the Maldonado family to the Kingdom of New Mexico. It documents the Maldonado descendants of Hernán Martín Baena and his wife Catalina García. This couple is connected to New Mexico through the marriage of their grandson Diego de Vera to María de Abendaño, granddaughter of Juan López Holguín and Catalina de Villanueva, founders of the Kingdom of New Mexico. From this marriage and the marriages of their great-granddaughters María Ortiz de Vera and Petronila de Vera (Salas), Don Hernán and Doña Catalina became the ancestors of leading New Mexicans in later generations. This volume contains not only their direct line of descent but also cousins, uncles, aunts, and in-laws. The Maldonado database has more than 5,800 names, with many of them represented here. The time period is generally from 1598 through the nineteenth century for most names, though the direct line continues to the present. Hernán Martín Baena is the ancestor of many people living in New Mexico today. In this volume his other descendants can trace their connections to cousins from this extended Maldonado family. Hernán Martín Baena and Catalina García are my twelfth great-grandparents.

His multi-lingual book, "El Camino to Jarales; Purgatorial Confessions with Don Manuel" lays out the culture of the Sanchez who migrated as soldiers-of-the cross to colonize La Nueva Galicia which is now New Mexico. Don Manuel's confessions speak of the hardships, sorrows and joys endured in taming a hostile territory.

The book is in good shape, only minor wear in the corners of the cover. There’s an annotation on the opening cover portion “179”, but I’m assuming that’s the number of the copy that was autographed by the author. No other annotations exist.

Purgatorial Conversations with Don Manuel

El Camino to Jarales: Purgatorial Confessions with Don Manuel The setting takes place in la Capilla de San Francisco Xavier in Jarales, New Mexico where an acerbically witted Don Manuel, destined for entrance into Heaven, has been sidetracked to serve his Purgatorial obligation. Only the sun disk on the altar gives him strength and reduces the agony in his soul. He cannot ascend into Heaven until he has found a mortal who will listen to his story about the Sanchez from Jarales. It is slow in coming! Lucia Sanchez meets with Don Manuel in la capilla when she is alive and agrees to ask her son to visit with him. The son takes long in doing and by that time Lucia chances upon another encounter with Don Manuel as she happens her way through Purgatory on the way to her eternal home. She departs and Don Manuel bemoans his plight but remains confined to feel the blood pass through his stomach. The son eventually meets with Don Manuel under the shadows of the night in the capilla nestled at the foot of the cottonwoods. Though suspicious of the "prisoner in la capilla," the son engages him in conversations but remains guarded of the medium under which events take place. The greater his suspicions, the more offers of proof are provided: transmigration, meeting with the dead and seeing wine turn to blood in a knothole. Don Manuel holds the son's hand as they cross the veneer between immortal and mortal life and relates names, cites events and dates only one with an intimate acquaintance can tell. Information spills like the unconscious perfume in roses. The means under which events unravel nearly drive the son insane. Events unfold only a sacred oracle can tell from intuitions of the pure-hearted. Such details in another place could lend reason for them to be false but the give and take in the capilla leaves no reason for refuting them. It is said, under extreme situations ancestral stories are dusted from their eternal closets to walk in the mortal world. Could this be the case or is the son bordering on the flowerbed of insanity? The son returns to the capilla after their last meeting and Don Manuel's departure for Heaven but the doors are bolted and so have remained. He questions the mayordoma about the doors being locked. She declares, "I have the only key and never leave the doors unlocked at night." This raises questions in the son. As stories of the past rage in his mind he understands conversations had to be quid-pro-quo for releasing Don Manuel. But, did they meet on the last pew and walk along the roads in Jarales? On the other hand, if Don Manuel had not been present, how else would the son know about the Sanchez?

Not much information about this particular printing, other than it’s from the Knickerbocker Press and distributed by Putnam’s Sons. Knickerbocker was a New York based news resource that dabbled in reprints of books up until just before WW2. There is no date printed in the book. Looks like, perhaps 1910s-mid 1920s. There’s some minor shelf wear, light scratches, and very small splotches on the cover as well as a small stain on the spine. There are also some pencil annotations from the previous owner and bookseller on the front page.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (early 1900s Knickerbocker Press Issue)

No date given, but looks to be late 1940s-early 1950s. Printed in Great Britain. This is a souvenir edition of longfellow’s famous poem that’s set in Nova Scotia. The book itself comes from Nova Scotia, and contains photographs and two historic maps printed on one removable page (see picture). Highly collectible. There is some wear on the jacket, including wrinkles and small rips and edge wear. There is a dedication inside from the previous owner’s friends.

There are stamps from the previous owner on the first page and the last page. No underlines or annotations. The pages are browning, typical for paperbacks from that time.

1984 Fawcett 1st printing. Signed with an original illustration and dedication by Batiuk. Classic comics; one of the longest-running newspaper comics in American history. There is a fair bit of wear on the cover, including a large crease on the back cover. There are some bits of edgewear and shelf wear , and a little bit of staining. The book content is in great shape. No annotations other than the signature.

1967 Penguin Book mass paperback reprint. Collectible volume, as it’s the first paperback version. The Tunnel Back is a warm and moving account of the struggles of opiate addicts to treat each other for their addiction. In the Synanon Houses addicts live together, withdraw themselves from drugs, work, and give each other "therapy" in the form of "synanons," or seminars. In these sessions, the participants may assault each other vigorously but only verbally. The synanons are designed to debunk the false ideas the addict has had about his own behavior, the joys of using drugs, etc. The Synanon organization has already received wide publicity, both good and bad. Mr. Yablonsky's book is the best available description of the Synanon technique and will be read with interest by all persons interested in drug dependence and delinquent behavior. It will probably have even greater appeal to lay audiences. The book has some stains, creasing, rub wear, and color fading on the cover. It also contains some pen underlines throughout the book. Binding is tight.
