On the Route of an Indiaman

The results and conclusions of 15 years work are presented here, detailing the research, restoration and preservation of thousands of items found on the wreck of the Honourable East Indian Company ship Griffin. The ship, which sank in the Sulu Sea in 1761, not only carried porcelain, silks and tea but was part of a secret mission to discover new sea routes for the expansion of the East India Company. Colour photographs show in detail the mastery of the chinese porcelain manufacturers and their master artists.

Features examples of Chinese furniture from the Ming dynasty to the early 20th century (while most are from the 18th century Ching dynasty). There is an extensive section on smaller furnishings and scholar objects, and many featured items show details of the wood grain and color and the superb carving. 

Tsai sought to disambiguate the various words used in different regions of Asia to describe huali, hongmu, and zitan, as well as to distinguish old growth zitan with recent examples of the species.
Like new condition with only minor shelf wear to the slip case and a few creases to the pages.

The purpose of the exhibit was to illustrate a variety of Chinese ceramics that appealed to and influenced Japanese aesthetics. Included are diplomatic gifts, ceramics fashioned for Japanese tea masters, such as kosometsuke, celadons, and decorated wares.

This is a slender hardbound Christie’s auction catalog (as described in the title), featuring fine examples of early Ming blue and white porcelain. Photographs are in color except for illustrations of the marks on undersides which are in black and white. Blue cloth covers with gold-stamped lettering. Very clean copy, with only slight shelf wear and a small tear to the dust jacket (see all photos). Lot items are described and well-researched with auction estimates only, not prices realized.

Important Early Ming Blue and White Porcelain

Copyright 1981 (see all photos for publishing information) this is a lavishly illustrated German language publication of the Roemer-Museum, Hildesheim, Germany and features many beautiful color and black-and-white illustrations of various forms of refined Chinese porcelain among the finest examples of their types. There is an appendix of reign marks and other marks found on the underside of the bases of many examples featured in the catalog. The pages are glossy and stitch bound (not glued). The book is in excellent condition with only very slight shelf wear to the covers. While the commentary is in German, the examples and dates provided should still be of great use to most readers.

A New Translation of the I Ching As Interpreted by Wang Bi

Used in China as a book of divination and source of wisdom for more than three thousand years, the I Ching has been taken up by millions of English-language speakers in the nineteenth century. The first translation ever to appear in English that includes one of the major Chinese philosophical commentaries, the Columbia I Ching presents the classic book of changes for the world today.

Richard Lynn's introduction to this new translation explains the organization of The Classic of Changes through the history of its various parts, and describes how the text was and still is used as a manual of divination with both the stalk and coin methods. For the fortune-telling novice, he provides a chart of trigrams and hexagrams; an index of terms, names, and concepts; and a glossary and bibliography.

Lynn presents for the first time in English the fascinating commentary on the I Ching written by Wang Bi (226-249), who was the main interpreter of the work for some seven hundred years. Wang Bi interpreted the I Ching as a book of moral and political wisdom, arguing that the text should not be read literally, but rather as an expression of abstract ideas. Lynn places Wang Bi's commentary in historical context.
