also a painter but lonely and consumed by alcohol. Asle and Asle are doppelgängers – two versions of the same person, two versions of the same life, both grappling with existential questions.

In this final instalment of Jon Fosse’s Septology, the major prose work by ‘the Beckett of the twenty-first century’ (Le Monde), Christmas is approaching. Tradition has it that Åsleik and Asle eat lutefisk together, but this year Asle has agreed for the first time to celebrate Christmas with Åsleik and his sister, Guro. On Christmas Eve, Åsleik, Asle, and the dog Bragi take Åsleik’s boat out on the Sygnefjord. Meanwhile, we follow the lives of the two Asles as younger adults in flashbacks: the narrator meets his lifelong love, Ales; joins the Catholic Church; starts exhibiting with Beyer; and can make a living by trying to paint away all the pictures stuck in his mind. After a while, Asle and Ales leave the city and move to the house in Dylgja. The other Asle gets married too, but his wedding ends with a sobbing bride and is followed soon after by a painful breakup.

Robert ParkeHarrison creates constructed photographs which tell stories of loss, struggle, and personal exploration within landscapes scarred by technology and over-use. He attempts to metaphorically and poetically link his laborious actions, idiosyncratic rituals and strangely crude machines into tales about our modern experience. The mythic world he creates mirrors our world, where nature is domesticated and controlled. The scenes display futile attempts to save or rejuvenate nature. His 'everyman' character patches holes in the sky, creates rain machines, chases storms to create electricity, communicates with the earth to learn its needs. Within these scenes, he creates less refined, less scientific, more ritualistic and poetic possibilities to work with nature rather than destroying it. The nature of his images and the process of their construction are interdisciplinary, embodying aspects of theater, sculpture, and painting, photography and performance. None of the images are real in the factual sense, but they are treated as precious talismans of a lost moment, a documented super-reality, whose message, like that of a myth, transcends the small realities of the day to day world.

Robert Descharnes (born 1926) is a photographer and writer, and has made numerous films, including L'Histoire prodigieuse de la dentelliere et du rhinoceros. He has written for magazines in France and elsewhere, and has published studies of major artists, among them Antoni Gaudi and Auguste Rodin. His labours have been primarily devoted to Salvador Dali, though, and he has helped organize Dali exhibitions at major museums and galleries throughout the world. Since 1950 he has been documenting and cataloguing Dali's paintings and writings, and is now considered the leading expert on the artist. Shortly before Dali's death, Descharnes was appointed by him to take charge of the rights to his works, within the Societe Demart Pro Arte B.V., of which Descharnes is president. As a friend of the artist for over thirty years, privy to the realities behind the public image, Robert Descharnes is uniquely qualified to analyse Dali the man and Dali the myth. Gilles Neret (born 1933) is an art historian, journalist and the author of numerous books on modern art. He has not only organized major retrospectives of Impressionists from Renoir to Gauguin in Japan but also Millet, Rousseau, Modigliani, Leger and Kandinsky as well as the Paris Biennale, modern sculpture, Dali... He is a founding member of the Seibu Museum and Wildenstein Gallery in Tokyo. He was chief editor and director of L'CEil and Connaissance des Arts.
