We call it the most wonderful time of the year. Children make their wish lists months in advance, and by mid-November shoppers are flooding the stores. Christmas music and television specials dominate the airwaves, and trees with their festive decorations go up all over town. The weeks before Christmas are consumed with baking, wrapping packages, and addressing cards to friends and family: There are programs and cantatas, parties and fun going on everywhere we look. Yes, it's all quite amazing. Even more amazing is that all these grand activities and preparations culminate in one small twenty-four-hour period. Sometimes, people get what they want out of that day; and more often, they don't. How much better would it be to share the spirit of Christmas, the meaning of Christmas, the glory of Christmas every day, away from all the hype and commercialism surrounding that one little day in December? That's the question hidden in Helen Steiner Rice's beautiful poetry and the devotionals that follow: Couldn't we show love to our families, appreciate our friends, be kind to strangers, and revel in the gift of Christ all year long?
