The author, Anna Sewell, wrote only this one book but so well did she make her four-legged hero tell the story of a life filled with ups and downs that Black beauty has been enjoyed by many generations of boys and girls. Reading how the handsome colt found a happy home with Squire Gordon and, later, passed from owner to owner until, at last, he was forced to draw a cab through London's streets, even those who seldom see a horse in these days of motor-cars, lorries and buses learn to know and to love the patient friend of man as did their fathers and grandfathers before them. No one should pass from childhood without reading this beautiful story.'
