Do you ever wonder how our common culture is created? Consider this: Pinocchio was first written when the Industrial Revolution was ramping up in Italy and the rest of Europe, and at the time, Italians were emigrating to work in other countries, leaving Italy falling behind. Pinocchio, the character, is similar to other Italian folklore characters of the time, all of them sort of bumbling idiots who preferred fun to work. In Pinocchio's case, he literally CANNOT be human until he learns to place work over fun, and his inability or reluctance to do that briefly transforms him into a literal pack animal capable of only the most menial of functions. Pinocchio has never left the public consciousness in the 141 years since it was first written, and all of the western world has internalized its message, which is at least part of the reason why the US fights the 4 day work week and fetishizes work culture.
