Artifacts, 71: The first uproar was the most common, too: the fear that using Artifacts would have some as-yet-unseen effect on humans. Saccharine was the most common analogy, as opponents or Artifact integration pointed out how many people had gotten cancer from drinking diet sodas, but DDT and thalidomide were referenced nearly as often. Pundits had spent the last few weeks talking on TV and in newspapers about the risk to "young, still-forming minds" from whatever hypothetical negative effects might be caused by exposing teens to Artifacts. Aaron's parents had frequently debated the subject at dinner, although 'debate' wasn't the correct word for th3m pointing to op-eds and heatedly agreeing with each other. Aaron had noted that many of his parents discussions had the tempo and tenor of an argument but that they weren't arguing with each other. At least they weren't lecturing him, as he mostly sat unnoticed during these talks, which had centered on "Alien Night Massacre" lately.
