1 Day In America, 5: I smoked back then but I didn't usually go out back to smoke. I'd go to the front of the office building, looking at the Capitol, and smoke a cigarette. Sometimes there was another guy out there. He worked in the building next door. I was always bad with names, probably because I don't really like people in general, don't like meeting new people, and don't care about most people in any particular way. But back then I'd recently heard a trick, on talk radio, which i also was into back then, about remembering names. The trick, this show had said, was that when you meet someone new and learn their name, pick out something distinctive about them and associate that with their name. So my smoking buddy was Large Glasses. Large Glasses wasn't outside the morning of the airplanes, and as I went into the office to start the day, the airplanes weren't anything more than a really interesting thing to talk about if I had to talk to someone that day.
