Montaigne was a highly influential thinker during the early days of the enlightenment. He was predominantly influenced by Pyrrhonism which is a form of Skepticism brought to Greece by Pyrro of Elis the first Skeptic. The practice of the skeptics is to follow appearances and to suspend judgment on the nature of things. Such a practice leads to ataraxia or tranquility. Montaigne’s commitment to this is shone on his personal emblem, a scale with the motto “What do I Know?”. He was a campion of tolerance.
