ARTIFACTS [a serialized story told in book sale comments] part 31: This time Kerry was prepared for the shove and kept her balance. She stepped back and said, hoping that the quaver in her voice would not be mistaken for fear, "Nobody would ever stare at you, Jillian." She paused for effect, then added "Least of all Quentin." Jillian was on her before she knew what was happening. The other girl ran full-bodied into Kerry, wrapping her arms around the larger girl, and pushing Kerry backwards until they both fell down. Kerry felt a sharp pain in her elbow and her vision went red for a moment. It hurt so bad she barely noticed Jillian slapping her several times before standing up and spitting on Kerry's sweater. "Stay out of my way, lezzie," she said, and stormed off, with a few of her hangers-on following. The rest of the kids stood around, and Kerry, still on the floor and gasping from pain, noticed that Quentin was one of them. She met his eyes and he turned away.
