Elon Musk was accused of paying people to vote in the Wisconsin Supreme Court election 4/1/25. Bribing someone to vote is a Class I felony punishable by up to 3 1/2 yrs in prison and a $10,000 fine. Leave aside the imprisonment, and consider the fine. Musk's candidate, Brad Schimel, lost by about 240,000 votes. If Musk had paid that many more people $100 each to vote for Schimel he would have spent $24,000,000. If he were then fined the maximum for each voter the total fine would be $2,400,000,000. So Musk could bribe people into an election win, and pay just 0.7% of his wealth as a fine. But imprisonment, you say! Well, Wisconsin spends $60-100 million per year on all law enforcement and corrections. THAT is 0.02% of Musk's wealth. People with far fewer resources are able to manipulate the justice system (Donald Trump.) Would you bet any real stakes that Musk would ever go to jail? Billionaires are above the law and should be illegal.
