Among the few facts known about William Shakespeare's life: he was baptized on April 26, 1564, in Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-upon-Avon, England. Tradition assigns his birth to April 23; he died fifty-two years later on the same day. At eighteen he married Anne Hathaway, eight years his senior. Their daughter Susanna was born six months later, followed by twins Judith and Hamnet in 1585. The next seven years of his life are unaccounted for, but by 1592 he was well known in the London theatre world. From 1589 to 1613 he wrote the thirty-six plays (and cowrote two others) on which his fame chiefly rests, though his place in the top rank of English writers would have been secured just by his excellence as a poet. He bought one of the finest houses in Stratford in 1597 and lived there from 1610. He is buried outside Holy Trinity Church.
