The story follows Sam, a musician and single father, who is feeling rejected and depressed after his on-again, off-again girlfriend decides to marry someone else. He takes his daughter, Jill, to his hometown in Texas for the holidays to visit his family. While there, he reconnects with a former high school girlfriend whose life is also at a crossroads. The book continues the story of Sam and Jill from the previous novels, Sunshine and The Sunshine Years.
