Seller Description
Toward the flame Pre-Owned in acceptable condition please see photos for details and condition. THE PERIOD COVERED by "Toward the Flame" lies between the end of June and the middle of August, 1918, and is told from the personal experience of the author as First Lieutenant of Company B., 111th Infantry, of the 28th Division, A.E.F. This division was the Pennsylvania National Guard Unit, known as the Keystone or "Iron" Division and saw some of the heaviest fighting on the American Fronts. It took part in both the Chateau-Thierry and Argonne drives. The story of "Toward the Flame" is the story of the fighting between the Marne and Vesle rivers. The book is made up from incidents written down on thie field of battle and from letters home from the hospital immediately after the author was wound-ed. The fierce fighting about the towns of Fismes and Fismette is particularly vividly told. At this time the Germans were making a stand on the Vesle river. The Americans were fighting for the bridge at Fismes. Mr. Allen's company was cut off on the German side of the river. The book ends about the time the author was wounded in a night attack on the American lines by German flame-throwers. GEORGE H. DORAN COMPANY
