Tangie Thomas is in her late twenties, a conservative social worker who has two loves: herself and men. But when someone from her past dies of AIDS, Tangie realizes that it's time to make some serious life changes. Sabrina Mayhew, the secretary in the unit, is a gossiper, whose habit of betraying confidences almost destroys her friendships and those of the people she cares most about. Bonnie Mae Abbot, at the age of fifty, is the St. Paul veteran of the group. She has no children of her own, so she has the tendency to mother everyone in the unit. The central figure of the story is Cordelia Berkeley, a devout Christian and recent divorcee who now is raising her headstrong teenage daughter alone. Cordelia, who has always been opinionated and quick to dole out advice to others, finds herself completely unable to cope when she discovers that Devon is pregnant. She suffers a debilitating stroke and succumbs to a depression so severe that it seems she's given up her faith. It is only through the unfaltering support of Tangie, Sabrina and, especially, Bonnie May, that Cordelia will learn the true meaning of friendship and faith. "A Change is Gonna Come" will appeal both to readers of mainstream African American women's fiction and to the market for Christian fiction.
