Lizzie Porter and Emily are best friends, almost like sisters. Then Lizzie dies. On the anniversary of Lizzie’s death, the Porter family invites Emily to visit the cemetery with them. On the way, Emily is drugged and kidnapped with the plan that Emily will become Lizzie Porter. Emily’s family is frantic but forced emails from Emily lead them to believe she has run away and that they should not look for her. Mrs. Porter has gone to extremes of recreating Lizzie’s bedroom, dyeing Emily’s hair, forcing Emily to wear contacts to change her eye color, and to wear Lizzie’s clothes -everything to transform Emily into her dead daughter alive again. Emily resists until Mrs. Porter threatens to kill Emily’s mother. It is then that Emily realizes how grief has destroyed Mrs. Porter’s sanity and how “the biggest lies come from the darkest places!” Emily plays along long enough to make friends who discover the truth and try to help her escape. But there are consequences to be paid.
