Seller Description
"Bargello is a type of needlepoint embroidery consisting of upright flat stitches laid in a mathematical pattern to create motifs. The name originates from a series of chairs found in the Bargello palace in Florence, which have a "flame stitch" pattern. Traditionally, Bargello was stitched in wool on canvas. Embroidery done this way is remarkably durable. It is well suited for use on pillows, upholstery and even carpets, but not for clothing. In most traditional pieces, all stitches are vertical with stitches going over two or more threads. Traditional designs are very colorful, and use many hues of one color, which produces intricate shading effects. The patterns are naturally geometric, but can also resemble very stylized flowers or fruits. Bargello is a quick and interesting type of needlepoint, and inexpensive since it does not require a painted canvas. Four way Bargello is just as quick and just as economical but much more interesting to work out, since the pattern grows out from the center in four different directions instead of just following along, line after line, from one side to the other. This vintage book explains the principles of four-way designs and suggests the infinite variations that can be made from a couple of basic patterns. It will be useful not only for ambition individual workers but also for needlepoint teachers. The book is in good condition with most of the damage to the paper dust jacket. There are no missing pages, no writing or highlighting of text, no folds or creases, and no rips or tears in the book. The book includes both photographs and detailed instructions.
