1000 Characters, 4: Rex Rex carefully put his gun away, staring in disbelief as Leonard bent down over Harry's body. He shook himself to reorient and looked around the street. Where had the gunman gone? Had he seen Rex? Did he know Rex had a gun, too? Was he going to be next? Rex didn't wait around to find out. There was a siren in the distance. It couldn't be coincidence. Rex looked up and down the street for open curtains, people in gardens, dogwalkers. For witnesses. He didn't see any and turned to run back up the park path he'd just come down as a shortcut to Harry's house. He was halfway up the hill, already hidden by trees, when a voice over a loud speaker shouted PUT YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEAD AND LAY ON THE GROUND. Rex stopped, and slowly lowered himself to the ground, turning to face the street. He saw nobody coming up the path. He quickly fished the gun out of his coat pocket and threw it under a nearby bush, then lowered his head. "Interesting," someone behind him said.
