The Other Side Of The Wardrobe 5: Outside the main house, the air was damp and chilly, the grass wet with fog that made it difficult to see the expanse of the Emeritus' holdings. Peg had seen them all in the time she'd worked here, though, and certainly had no difficulty following the stonework path towards the stables. It was nearly a quarter-mile to the stables, though, and she tried to go slowly, hoping that Thomas would have already taken one of the horses out somewhere so she could not find him. If the Emeritus asked about the delay she could say she'd had to walk cautiously on the slippery path. Her strategem failed. She could see a man moving around in front of the stables aimlessly. All the staff knew to stop doing their chores once the stop occurred when the children left, because when they came back the rewinding would undo it all and you'd have to do them twice. It was a sort of holiday when they left. Thomas smiled as he saw her approach. She shook her head sadly.
