1 Day In America, pt 1 I had dropped my wife off at her job, and driven the mile-or-so circuitous route around Capitol Square, a series of one-way streets and left turns and odd angles. The radio was on. Back then, there were no digital music players, no podcasts. There was talk radio, and music radio, and I had talk radio on, a guy called "Sly" who ran a liberal-ish talk show and who was partly responsible for my slow shift into liberalism. As I neared the parking garage, the topic (whatever it was) was interrupted by the news: a plane had just crashed into the World Trade Center. I pictured it in my mind, which wasn't hard to do. Just over a year before, Joy and I had gone to the Twin Towers as part of our low-budget honeymoon. We hadn't gone up in them, but had browsed around the set of shops in the basement of the Center. And I had taken a picture from the base of the towers, the two of them extending all the way to the top of the sky.
