Both volumes of the new edition of Basic Kanji Book from Bonjinsha Publishing. Essential to anyone self-studying Japanese! Volume one comes with an answer booklet for the exercises, but volume two doesn't appear to have an answer key. I didn't see any writing in either book- I always copied my work down in a separate notebook when using these. Despite being paperbacks, these are very weighty- the paper is a excellent quality, very smooth and perfect for writing on!
