Shop Spotlight: Feminist Book Club Outlet

Meet Feminist Book Club, an intersectional feminist book subscription service that has found a home on PangoBooks.

While there are a lot of different book subscription services out there, Feminist Book Club stands out due to its focus on uplifting female voices, dismantling systems of oppression, and supporting woman- and queer-owned businesses. Now, they’re listing some of their amazing titles on PangoBooks as well as giving away a free Pride flag with every order in June. Read on to learn more about this unique new seller.

Q: For those in our community who are unaware of Feminist Book Club, what can you tell us about what you do? How did this book subscription service get started, and what are you focusing on now as an organization?

A: Feminist Book Club started in 2018 as a Facebook group of friends reading the same feminist books together. Now, we're an international book subscription, similar to Book of the Month, except we are focused on social justice issues in our fiction and nonfiction selections. Feminist Book Club is also working towards being the go-to hub for intersectional feminist media, so we have a daily blog, twice weekly podcast, and popular Instagram and TikTok accounts to share smart, approachable, and inspiring conversations from a nationwide team of contributors.

Q: How has Feminist Book Club been using Pango to sell? What sort of books can readers find in your Pango shop?

A: Feminist Book Club is primarily a book subscription company, although we also do regular pop-ups both around and beyond the Twin Cities. However, we're not a typical bookstore. Our website isn't conducive to selling individual titles, and we also do not want to focus our energy there. Many of our customers have asked if we sell individual books online, so we decided to use Pango to sell our overstock and gently used books! In our Pango shop, in addition to our previously featured books of the month, you can also find titles from events we've done, special themes we've featured, and partnerships with other organizations.

Q: What are some titles in your Pango shop that you would recommend? What makes them great?

A: The Three Mothers by Anna Malaika Tubbs is one of those books that sits with you for a long time. Brilliantly researched, Tubbs traces the lives and legacies of the mothers of Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin to craft a stunning homage to Black motherhood. FBC member favorite When Women Were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill is exactly what it sounds like: in this alternate reality, fed up women throw in the towel and become dragons instead. It's smart, funny, and full of heart. Love in Color by Bolu Babalola is everything I would want in a short story collection: quick stories, funny and loveable characters, and perfect for bedtime, both regular and steamy! This book features retellings of classic myths from around the world, including but not limited to familiar Greek and Roman mythologies. Feminist Book Club is dedicated to diversifying our members' bookshelves, and the representation in this collection is top notch!

Q: What exciting things are on the horizon for Feminist Book Club?

A: We'll be hiring a few more content contributors this summer, so make sure you're signed up for our emails to learn more!
