W. E. B. Du Bois (1868-1963) was an African American civil rights activist, sociologist, educator, historian, and author. He was a leader in the early civil rights movement and a co-founder of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He is best known for his book The Souls of Black Folk (1903) and his advocacy of Pan-Africanism.
