James C. Scott

James C. Scott is an American political scientist and anthropologist. He is a Sterling Professor of Political Science and Anthropology at Yale University, known for his work on the ways that subaltern people resist domination. Scott's research focuses on the ways that weaker, non-state actors in society resist or undermine the power of the state without engaging in direct, collective, confrontation. Some of his major works include "Weapons of the Weak: Everyday Forms of Peasant Resistance," "Domination and the Arts of Resistance: Hidden Transcripts," and "Seeing Like a State: How Certain Schemes to Improve the Human Condition Have Failed," which critiques high-modernist, centralized state planning and the assumptions behind it. His writings cover a broad range of topics such as anarchism, peasant politics, resistance, and statecraft. Scott's work has been influential across disciplines including political science, anthropology, sociology, and history.
